> Rebel Assault: Mac Demo

A demo for the Apple Mac release of Rebel Assault is now available for download. You'll need the classic environment installed if you want to try it on OS X.

> Direct linking to downloads

Some sites, which will remain nameless, have started to link directly to the patches and demos available for download from this site. Please don't do that, it uses up our valuable bandwidth without crediting the source. As you may have noticed this site contains no adverts and has no incoming revenue stream, we cannot afford to subsidise bandwidth for other sites.

Feel free to link to the page containing the links to the downloads, eg pages named demo_??.shtml. We move our demo/patch hosting around from time to time as we rely on generous offers to host the downloads for free. If you link directly to the downloads you'll find your link might break at some point in the future.

Those of you with links already in place will find that users visiting from your site will be automatically redirected to the relevent page.

Or you could just download the demo and host it yourself...

> Yoda Stories on Windows XP

Alex emailed in to ask about Yoda Stories compatibility on Windows XP. After a bit of investigation it seems it is possible to get it to run. Just follow the following steps.

  • Download an updated WavMix dll from here http://www.compuphase.com/wavemix180.zip, for info click here
  • Unzip that file and copy the wavemix32.dll over the version that exists in your Yoda Stories directory.
  • Right click on the 'YODESK.EXE' file in your install directory, click properties. Choose the compatibility tab then tick all the check boxes and select 'Windows 95' for the compatibility mode.
  • Now start the game as normal and it should run. You may be able to untick the '640x480' and '256 Colour' options, just experiment and see what works for you

> New Site Design: First Look - Rebel Assault

Today brings the first new content to Star Wars Gamer in over five years. We've been working away to redevelop the back end of the site to create a much more flexible and manageable infrastructure. Hopefully this will enable us to bring you more detailed content more quickly and more easily.

Rebel Assault is the first game to be converted over to the new system and with it there's a new review, 23 new screenshots, a new strategy guide and some details on its compatibility on modern platforms.

The design is pretty much the same as it was before but the tabels have gone and have been replaced with CSS. Even after all these years we still believe the design meets its goals of easy navigation and page size. It also renders well in text based browsers.

If you're interested in how the back end works it's powered by AxKit which is an XML pipelining engine. Basically the details for each game will be stored in one or two XML files, these are then passed through a XSLT stylesheet to produce the final page. This should reduce the number of files required to build the site from over 300 to about 20.

If you've got any comments, we'd love to hear them, drop us an email.

> Rebel Assault Demo

A bit of a rarity for you here, I've found a pre-release demo for the ancient action-on-rails shooter 'Rebel Assault'. Coming from the era of 386 and early 486 gaming it's a blast from the past, the graphics are terrible and the gameplay lacks variety but it's interesting non the less. Check out the demo page for more details.

> Demos and patches online

The demos and patches are finally back online. You can find them in the usual places.

For the first time there's a demo for Rebel Assault 2 available. You can play through the asteroid mine clearing mission from the game. It's a DOS game (using DOS4GW) but plays fine in Windows XP.

Also a Mac verion of the Pit Droids demo is also now available.

> X-Wing Alliance / Cedega - Call to Arms

Calling all Cedega users. X-Wing Alliance is up for voting in this months poll. If you'd like to be able to play it in Cedega then go over and vote.

Cedega is an Linux application that enables you to play Windows DirectX games on Linux. Only registered Cedega users can vote in their development polls.

A compatability chart for the Star Wars games running on Cedega will hopefully be available soon.

> Demos and Patches Offline

Just a note to say the demos and patches are currently offline for a couple of days as the server that hosts them is being rebuilt.

Regarding the site relaunch. I'm thinking about turning the site into a Wiki, I'll hopefully have a demo up in the next couple of weeks for you all to try out.

> Poll Results In

The poll results for the game you'd like to see covered first are in. After stiff competition, and several attempts to stuff the ballot box, X-Wing takes the title. Closely followed by one of my favourites X-Wing Alliance, then in an admirable 3rd place Dark Forces.

The site design is going to take a few months to complete, so don't expect to see anything in a hurry. News will be posted here as and when, subscribe to the RSS feed to keep yourself up-to-date.

A couple of interesting sites I've come across recently that relate to our poll winners are:

http://darkforces.jediknight.net/ A Dark Forces mod for Jedi Academy. They've completed the first 3 levels and a demo is out now. Give it a go, it's an amazing project.

http://www.xwaupgrade.com/ The X-Wing Alliance Upgrade project. They aim to produce improved 3d models for the craft in the game, taking advantage of features such as transparency that were never implemented fully in the original game.

It's a 'Yes!'

Over 50 people have voted 'Yes' to bring back Star Wars Gamer as a retro site.

50 positive votes was the break point where I'd decided that I'd actually do it. It's only take 11 days to gather these votes, which is much faster than I'd anticipated.

Some rough ideas for the new site are in place, for example the current site was entirely hand-coded, and at over 300 pages you can probably imagine how impossible that is to maintain, as such that's going to be ditched in favour of a much more modern, and cooler, XML backend, proberly powered by AxKit.

However there's more to the site redesign that just knocking up a new backend, the content needs a refresh too. To assist I'm asking you to vote for which game you'd like to get the most priority. Please vote with the buttons above, the games with the highest numbers of votes will get their content updated first.

The games above include their expansion packs, i.e. if you're wanting to see 'Mysteries of the Sith' covered then vote for 'Jedi Knight'

You can vote once per source IP address, apologies if you're behind a proxy and someones already voted with your IP but it's the easiest way to prevent ballot stuffing

Retro Gamer?

It's nearly 5 years since Star Wars Gamer got a serious update so most of the games it covers are now considered retro, for example the original X-Wing game was released way back in 1993 a staggering 12 years ago.
I've been thiking about revamping the site content with a retro twist. Ideas for new content include:

  • Making it work. How to play these games on today's Windows XP and Linux systems.
  • Updated reviews, what games have stood the test of time?
  • A wiki, or perhaps forums, so you can talk about the games.
  • More strategy guides a posibility.

If you'd like to see Star Wars Gamer make a comeback, or if you think it's a daft idea, vote using the buttons above.

Way back when...

Having come over all nostalgic looking over this site I thought I'd look around some of my older files to see if I could find any of the old site layouts. Despite finding all kinds of things I'd thought long lost, there was nothing to be found. Then remembering that anything you ever publish on the internet will follow you for the rest of your life, I hopped over to the Wayback Machine and found the following 2 pages:

If you'd like an overview of the site these days take a look at our site map.

Tidying up.

Well I never realised that we still got over 80 visitors a day. Okay so it's not the golden days of 1000 a day but we've not had a serious site update for 3 years ;-). In honor of those 80 visitors I've been tidying things up, the download links are now not completely broken, however they still need checking for 404's. Also I've cleaned up this front page, clearly some of the newer (less old?) content got lost along the way, *shrug*. The X-Wing Alliance strategy guide films are back on-line.

'No, we have no magazines'

A word to the lady who emailed in to say:

I am writing to request a complementary subscription for our client xxxcom Consumer Products for your publication, Star Wars Gamer.

We still don't publish a magazine, and to anyone else out there we don't dish out corporate feebies.

It's Back!

Well after an absense of the best part of a year and a half swgamer.com is back on-line. I've no plans to update any of the content on the site particularly but it's all here as a reference, hope you find it useful. Some of the cgi stuff is broken at the moment, I'll try and get it fixed. Some content has been lost over the year but hey never mind!

Another new Star Wars game

TheForce.net is reporting about a new Star Wars game that is in development, here's the heads-up

LucasArts is developing what sounds to be an Episode I related flight simulator type of game. The project is code named "Europa" and is anticipated to run only on the higest end PCs and one of the next generation consoles.

From what I've seen it looks like it's shaping up into a very cool game. One source suggested that Europa is, quite simply, the most beautiful flight/simulator/shooter that just has to be seen to be appreciated. More soon.

TheForce.net has news that LucasArts have registered the domain name starwarson-line.com, but interestingly starwarsonline.com and starwars-online.com are both registered to other people, given LucasFilms recent takeover of tatooine.com I'm surprised they didn't demand that these other derivatives be handed over.

A patch for X-Wing Alliance to enable multi-crew options in the YT-1300 and YT-2000 and Falcon is available from Outpost D34. It can be downloaded here (5Kb). Here's the info on installing it:

All you have to do is copy the shiplist.txt from this zip to your XWA directory and boom there you have it. There will be 2 player slots, the blue one for the pilot and green one for the gunner. the YT-1300, YT-2000 and the Falcon will all have Gunner postions in multiplayer. HOWEVER ALL players must have the modified shiplist.txt for it to work, otherwise XWA tends to get evil.

We are currently trying to arrance a discount for The Phantom Menace and Racer for our European fans. More details as we get them.

The Price Watch page has been updated. The main highlight is that HMV is currently offering X-Wing Alliance for £29.99 and you also get a free joypad (not a very good one, to be honest). This is a sale price and probably won't last for ever, so if you still holding off from buying X-Wing Alliance hop down the high street and buy it.

Jedi Nights has been sent the following release dates and prices (from a bloke at Best Buy) for the new Star Wars games. (These are US dates not UK ones).

The Phantom Menace - 29/5/99 $44.99

Star Wars Gamer has joined forces with BlackJedi to provide a site which covers a much larger range of Star Wars stuff. As you can see this has meant a couple of changes around the site, for the better I hope you'll agree. The main difference this will make to you is the availability of the site without annoying adverts and a higher level of stablility.

Our venture with BlackJedi will mean that the other site mirrors will close over the next few days, so bookmark this new page now. Thanks to GeoCities, Xoom, and, WebJump for providing the free webspace.

Updated X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter add-ons page.

Updated Price Watch.

April 13th 1999

Well it's another new look to the site. I've decided to change to a navigation bar on the main page rather than a framed side bar. I think that this enables you to find what you want more easily and also gives more screen space to the reviews. Please let me know what you think of the new look.

March 25th 1999

Hi, I'm back home and my computer has just about survived the journey. While I've been away a demo has been released for X-Wing Alliance. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet as it's a massive 28Mb download and I'm using a 33.6 Modem at home rather than my nice university link. I'll tell you more once I've had a chance to play it.

March 19th 1999

X-Wing Alliance is set for release in the week of March 22nd. This is acording to an official LucasArts mailing.

This site finally gets a much needed overhaul. A new design has finally been implemented which, I hope, creates an easier interface to all the information. You will also find that the design permeates throughout the whole site. I think that it's about time that this site had a proper list of aims:

  • To be updated as regularly as possible, hopefully every day.
  • A faster response to e-mails.
  • To cover every PC Star Wars game around, extending to other platforms at a later date.

I hope that you will keep returning to this site as a few changes are still in the pipeline.
