The culmination of the entire game is the Death Star Tunnel Run. It's quite
a tricky mission until you get the hang of it. I have found the best tactic when flying
through the first section is to switch lasers to maximum charge, this has the effect
of slowing you down sufficiently whilst keeping your lasers fully charged
The pipes blocking your way can be shot out fairly easily as it is a good idea to
take out as many as possible in the section before you break off to take the long way round,
this is because you will be flying out this way at speed so anything you can do to help now
is a good idea.
When you get to the section with the moving containers I have found the best tactic
is to slow to 1/3 speed ('[' key) and then increase slowly to about 45%, you should then
avoid the containers. If you hit one or get stuck in the ring (I think this is a bit
of a bug) then switch to gun turrets and then quickly back to cockpit, this should free you.
After this section Admiral Ackbar will complain about losing ships, this is just
before the split in the tunnel. You have a choice as to what to do now. You can either
press on to the centre of the Death Star or take out the superlaser. You can tell
which way is which by using your targeting display.
If you decide to head to the lens take a shot at it as soon as you get there and
then head back the way that you came, you must leave quickly as the laser continues to fire
even without the lens.
At one point when heading to the centre you will come to an open area with zero-g stormtroopers
in it. The first thing to do is take out any Tie Fighters that are still following you, using
autofire from the gun-turrets is easiest. Then take out the stormtroopers and the gun turret
they have been constructing.
Eventually you will come to the power generator. Wedge should fire of some torpedos at
the generator and you will see the shield strength drop. If you need to recharge your shields
you can wait here until they are done, I recommend having at least 100% shields and a
full laser charge. You should then aim for the
'Reactor' part of the generator (use ',' to select it). Fire a pair of missiles at it then
turn around and head out the way you came.
Flying out is easy if you've got fast reactions. You need to fly quickly or the
explosion will get you. Having lasers and shields at normal level is okay, or change to
full lasers and no shields when your lasers are getting low. When flying fast you
don't have as much time to shoot the obstacles and will need to dodge some of them instead.
If you hear a rumbling then you are going too slowly and will need a massive burst of speed
to get out of there alive.
This mission can be very hard to start with but persevere it's worth the effort when
you realize you just destroyed the Death Star.
