In X-Wing you play a Rebel pilot out against the Empire aiming to kick ass. You can fly X-Wings (obviously), A-Wings and Y-Wings, later on you also get to fly a B-Wing. X-Wing was the first game to use the amazing ELS (Engines, Lasers, Shields) system which enables you to balance your consumption of the total ship power between these areas. This system takes quite along time to get used to but it's worth putting the effort in. The mission structure in this game is very linear and you can't advance to the next mission without completing the one that you are on. This sometime can be a bit of a pain but you usually get a choice of battle to do which you can swap between so you can give yourself a break from a mission if you are finding it too hard. In the original X-Wing game the ships were depicted by plain polygons which looks very poor by today's standards but the collectors CD gave it a bit of a face lift and now all the polygons are Gourard shaded and look much better. The collectors CD includes the 'B-Wing' and 'Imperial Pursuit' mission packs along with some bonus missions which make this CD a bargain especially as it is now out on budget and you should be able to buy it for about £10. This game can be run on virtually any computer from a 386 upwards but takes advantage of a 486 to provide Gourard shading. Unfortunately it does not have an SVGA mode (unlike Tie-Fighter Collectors CD) so the graphics can be a bit blocky. But still this is a game I would recommend to anybody as it provides genuine satisfaction. Copyright 1997-2006 Gordon Johnston - Hosted by newswall.org.uk |
